Allan Ramsay: Father and Son
Allan Ramsay, both father and son, poet and painter, were at the heart of Edinburgh Enlightenment society. The younger Ramsay became a major figure in 18th century British art and in the social and intellectual life of his time. As court painter to George III in later life, he appeared a committed supporter of the Hanoverian dynasty, so the recent discovery of an earlier portrait by him of Bonnie Prince Charlie came as a bit of a surprise. The talk will cover his life and artistic development, focusing especially on the paintings we can see in public collections, palaces and castles in Scotland.
Marion Maudsley is a volunteer guide at Kelvingrove. She was a Scottish Blue Badge tourist guide until fairly recently, but her interest in art history started long before that, and Allan Ramsay, the painter, has always been a particular favourite.
