Over 60 Friends and their guests created a sea of different hues of Pink when they visited the Barbie exhibition this week followed by a delicious Lunch in Kelvingrove’s Lower Ground Floor Cafe this week. Going around the exhibition, we were able to see over 250 objects spanning nearly 70 years of Barbie History from 1959 to the present day! The exhibition included a hand painted, first edition Barbie from 1959, early prototypes and the first Black, Hispanic and Asian examples of the doll. It was interesting to see the how the Barbie exhibition reflected changes in fashion, architecture (including the iconic Dreamhouses) and vehicles; introduced different characters such as Ken; showed women’s changing roles in society; and embraced inclusiveness and diversity. We were impressed by the power that this example of a toy can have on a child’s development and understanding of the world. Well done to Mattel for designing and creating Barbie dolls and accessories that children can use safely to explore and experience an exciting and fun imaginary world.
After visiting the exhibition, we were ready for a glass of Pink Fizz on arrival in the Café, followed by a delicious two-course lunch served with red or white wine. We finished our lunch with cupcakes with pink rose decorations to accompany our tea and coffee.
Before leaving the Café, we surprised one of our members with a prize for the person who embraced “In the Pink” in the most enthusiastic and memorable way. It was won by Michael Hutchinson wearing accessories that were unforgettable. Well done, Michael!
We finished our event with Friends and their guests able to take advantage of a special discount in the shop for a little bit of retail therapy. Everyone said they thoroughly enjoyed the event and were looking forward to being back at Kelvingrove for the Christmas Lunch at the beginning of December! Many thanks go to all the staff at Kelvingrove but particularly Bryan, Craig, Derek and all the fantastic team in the cafe, for all their hard work, enthusiasm, skill and effort to make our “In the Pink” Event such a success!
