Please join us in the comfortable surroundings of Glasgow’s Kelvin Hall for this live lecture, The City of Glasgow in Four Chapters, given by prolific historian, author, editor, academic, university lecturer and publisher Neil Baxter. Tea, coffee and biscuits will be served afterwards.

‘Discover the twelfth century bishop and marketing genius who ‘invented’ the City of Glasgow as a centre for pilgrimage, making it safe and prosperous in the process. Witness the City’s transformation over the following 850 years into one of Europe’s wealthiest centres of international trade, manufacturing and creativity. Learn how cotton weaving and a Sunday afternoon stroll on Glasgow Green helped the Dear Green Place to gear up into the global powerhouse of heavy industry and ‘million-plus conurbation’ of the Victorian era. Finally hear how Glasgow is now truly a World City – with reason to be cheerful!’

Neil Baxter is a Fellow of The Royal Institute of British Architects, a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts, a founder of the European Urban Research Association and received Glasgow’s Lord Provost’s Medal (for services to heritage) in 2008.
