The recent Degas exhibition at the Burrell featured his famous portrait of Diego Martelli, an Italian art critic who supported progressive art movements like the Impressionists and their Italian counterparts, known as the Macchiaioli. This was a slightly earlier group of 19th century painters, who favoured subjects from everyday life and developed their own techniques for the depiction of light. The talk will introduce some of the main painters of this group, what the name means and how to pronounce it.
