The Carmelite Church in Boppard am Rhein, Germany, once housed seven enormous stained-glass windows, which were removed and sold after the Napoleonic Wars. The Burrell Collection contains panels from three of them. How did they come to be in Glasgow, what happened to the rest of the panels and what is their story?
Friends and their guests are cordially invited to join us on a visit to the Burrell Collection for an opportunity to view these magnificent stained glass panels and enjoy a fascinating talk from Julie Chambers about their origins and history. Afterwards, tea/coffee and cakes will be served in the Exhibition Space.
As well as being FoGM’s Finance Convener, Julie Chambers is a volunteer guide at the Burrell Collection, has an MA in German Literature from the University of Birmingham and speaks the language fluently. This has led her to become fascinated by the Boppard windows and establish links with an organisation in Boppard that is researching their history and recreating the scene in the interior of the church. She has visited Boppard twice in the past two years and first gave this talk to fellow volunteer guides earlier this year.
